Around three-quarters of women suffer with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) / premenstrual tension (PMT), with up to 40 per cent claming that it impacts on their quality of life, and a minority becoming violent or suffering severe depression. So can a juicing recipe help?
Recent research suggests fennel could help millions of women beat the monthly misery of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) / premenstrual tension (PMT). It is believed that fennel could help to rebalance the female sex hormones which lay behind some of the symptoms of PMS / PMT.
Increasing dietary magnesium often decreases menstrual cramping as well as PMS / PMT. Raw spinach is perhaps the best source of dietary magnesium, providing 79mg per 100g portion.
Cucumbers are great for helping if you feel bloated. The humble cucumber has a very high water content and serves as a natural diuretic, helping to increase urination and the flush out of toxins from the body. Cucumbers are rich in sulfur and silicon to stimulate the kidneys into better removal of uric acid. Have you ever had cucumber slices put over puffy eyes during a day at the spa? Eating them raw can do the same thing to reduce internal “puffiness”.
Pineapple is another food that has been shown to reduce PMS symptoms and, as it is approximately 85 percent water, it also helps to flush excess fluid and reduce bloating. Pineapple also contains bromelain, an enzyme that breaks down proteins, promotes good digestion, and helps to eradicate some stomach problems. The sweetness of pineapple also helps curb cravings for sugary foods.
- 1/2 bulb of fennel
- 1/2 pineapple
- 1/2 cucumber
- A big handful of Spinach (approx 40g / 1.4 oz)
- 1/2 lime (skin-on)
How to Make It
Simply juice all the ingredients (fennel, pineapple, cucumber, spinach and lime) and serve over ice.
Note: if you are using a centrifugal juicer (like the Philips wide neck juicers, Sage juicers or Breville Juice Fountain) then I suggest putting one or two chunks of pineapple in the chute, packing the spinach in tightly and placing the rest of the pineapple on top. Then juice the cucumber, fennel and lime. This will get you the maximum yield from the spinach.
