Carol Brace was the first person in the world to become a fully qualified Natural Juice Therapist accredited by the Complimentary Medical Association. After working within the UK National Health Service (NHS) for 20 years, Carol saw first hand how the poor nutrition provided by hospitals was not aiding patients to recover from common diseases. Carol says “The medical industry is so highly influenced by drugs companies the emphasis on proper nutrition as a means of preventing major illness is non-existent. They really need to learn more about effective and applicable nutrition.”
Carol discovered personally the power of juicing in 2006.
Neil Martin: When did you first start juicing and how did you first learn about the idea?
Carol Brace: It was after a visit to my Mum (who was taking around 17 pills a day and in the early stages of Dementia) and a casual remark about how I was coming up to retirement age (I was 58) when I too, would be getting ill, taking pills and forgetting what day it was!
When I left Mum I stopped at a book shop and headed for the Health section, Jason Vale’s book “7lbs in 7 days” jumped out at me from one of the shelves. As I wasn’t looking for a diet book, I went to put it back but first had a browse through some pages, very quickly I knew this was more than a diet book. I bought my book, when I got home I started to read and didn’t put it down until I had read it.
Neil Martin: What made you decide to start juicing?
Carol Brace: Reading “7lbs in 7 days” by Jason Vale
Neil Martin: Did you follow a specific program, if so which one?
Carol Brace: The following day I ordered my first Juicer, a Jack Lalanne. I thought it was a terrible machine, but that didn’t deter me as I prepared to do my first 7 day detox, following 7lbs in 7 days.
Neil Martin: What have you found to be the biggest changes / benefits you’ve experienced since you started juicing?
Carol Brace: There have been so many over the last 7 years. I have never really been hugely overweight but have yo yo dieted for most of my adult life. I smoked, ate all of the wrong things, and drank gallons of diet drinks, starting many years ago with one called Tab, then onto Diet Coke. I luckily didn’t suffer many health problems, but did take painkillers every day for headaches, (I now believe they were caused mainly by the Cokes). In fact, I took them on the days I didn’t have a headache just in case I got one – I was obviously addicted!
Today I feel alive. I never have headaches and don’t think about dieting any more. I eat what I want, when I want. Most of the time it is juice / raw foods.
I think the main change for me is – over the last few years I have found “ME” or “CAZ” (as my childhood mates used to call me) again. As we grow we tend to leave the child behind as life, work, parenting etc take over. I have become very intuitive about my body, I listen and give it what it needs. I am confident that I will live a long healthy life because I found the Juice of Life again.
Neil Martin: Since you started juicing what have you found most challenging and how did you deal with this challenge?
Carol Brace: To be honest, I have not really found anything challenging, it is so easy. I do get people at my workshops complaining about the difficulties of juicing every day, washing the machine is a very popular one, don’t have the time, too expensive – I think because that first book made such a HUGE impact on me, I didn’t experience any challenges.
Neil Martin: How has juicing changed your life?
Carol Brace: Juicing has changed my life in so many ways, as mentioned I found my inner child again.
I became a wife a week after my 18th birthday and a mother the following year, I had 3 children by the time I was 21 so my place in the world was mapped out.
I started juicing at 58 years of age, still thinking retirement was going to be spent reading all the books I had purchased over the years and never had the time to read, enjoying my 6 grand-children, and generally taking things easy. But the universe had other plans and my Juicy Journey led me to becoming the first ever fully qualified Natural Juice Therapist at 62
Neil Martin: What has been your biggest juicing mistake and why?
Carol Brace: Not starting earlier, if I had this opportunity 40 years ago, oh my goodness, to feel better than I do now – WOW!
Neil Martin: Which do you think is more essential to health and wellbeing, exercise or diet and nutrition?
Carol Brace: Good question Neil – health and wellbeing for me goes further than exercise and nutrition. I think you can have the best diet possible and exercise every day but if you lack a “passion” you will never be truly healthy.
I have to admit I do not exercise as much as I should – but I do have a good diet and above all I have a HUGE “Passion”. So my thoughts are:- 1 – Passion 2 – Excellent Nutrition 3 – Exercise (if I were younger I may think differently)
Neil Martin: How much and what kinds of exercise do you regularly do?
Carol Brace: I move every day, always active, and now I have added a Juice round to my business I am getting busier. The downfall is time for me, so as I mentioned above I don’t do as much as I should but I like to walk, swim, meditate and do yoga.
Neil Martin: What do you eat / drink on a typical day?
Carol Brace: Now the winter is upon us I start my day with a “Hug in a Mug” [juice 1/2 an apple, 1/3 lemon (wax free), and 3 cm fresh ginger. Place teaspoon of Manuka honey into a large mug and pour half fill with almost boiling water. Stir in the honey and then pour over the juice. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon, and sip slowly]. I also have a wheatgrass shot, then around 10/11am a juice. I will either have another juice or a bowl of soup around 2pm with a good nutritious meal around 7pm – I drink water throughout the day and if I do feel a bit peckish I may have some nuts or fruit.
Neil Martin: Is your diet completely vegetarian / vegan?
Carol Brace: I don’t use a label – Over the last few years my taste has changed. I no longer eat any kind of meat and very little dairy. I do have the occasional coffee or some cheese and of course use pro-biotic yoghurt in some of my juices – I eat salmon and mackerel occasionally, but mostly I eat raw plant foods
Neil Martin: What are your thoughts on caffeine and alcohol?
Carol Brace: Caffeine and alcohol, of course, are very addictive substances, and when taken in excess can cause major health problems. However, I truly believe that if your nutrition is based on an 80 / 20 basis 80% whole, raw plant food then the remaining 20% can be what you want. The body is an amazing machine and can deal with a small amount of “rubbish”. Having said that I always advise my clients to drastically reduce their intake of both caffeine and alcohol.
Neil Martin: What advice would you give someone who is thinking about adding juicing to their life?
Carol Brace: This one is easy – Just Do it! it will change your life forever.
Neil Martin: If you were stuck on a desert island with a working juicer and blender and an unlimited supply of just 6 ingredients, what would those ingredients be?
- Coconut oil
Carol says on her website, carolbrace.co.uk: “If you are ready for a change, it is time to get yourself a juicer, gain the knowledge and skills to start juicing and importantly moving to a slim, fit and healthy body. It’s worked for me and my family and now I’m able to share my knowledge with others, there really is no greater job in the world.”
