I attended Jason Vale’s Juice Academy in June 2012. As part of the 4 day event one of the sessions involved working in small teams, delivering juice demonstration to each other. One of the people in my team, Yvonne Hansen, had come to the academy from Norway with her mum. Although Yvonne’s mum often made juice for her, the juice Yvonne made in that demonstration was the first time she had ever made a fresh juice. I recently caught up with Yvonne to find out if she has continued juicing since the academy.
Neil Martin: When did you first start juicing and how did you first learn about the idea?
Yvonne Hansen: I started to learn about juicing a little bit before attending Jason Vale’s Juice Academy. My mum was making juice for me, my brothers and sisters, but I made my first juice at the academy.
Neil Martin: What made you decide to start juicing?
Yvonne Hansen: During the academy I learned so many exciting things about juicing and how good it is for your body, thats I continued making juice. That, and because its delicious!
Neil Martin: Did you follow a specific program, if so which one?
Yvonne Hansen: I did not follow a specific program. My mum suggested that I should experiment. She told me as long as I had apple, orange, or pineapple as a base, my juices should taste good.
Neil Martin: What have you found to be the biggest changes / benefits you’ve experienced since you started juicing and how has juicing changed your life?
Yvonne Hansen: Juicing has change my life in a good way. In particular, my digestive system became better. All my life I have struggled with digestive problem. It could go days without using the toilet. Since juicing this has got much better. I also feel more awake and fresh.
Neil Martin: Since you started juicing what have you found most challenging and how did you deal with this challenge?
Yvonne Hansen: I think my biggest challenge is money to by the fruit and vegetable. I am a student so I don’t have a lot of money. I always have some fruit and vegetable in my fridge, and juicing is so easy so I just use whatever I have.
Neil Martin: What has been your biggest juicing mistake and why?
Yvonne Hansen: My biggest juicing mistake was when I was making a juice for my boyfriends parents. I was planing to make a sweet strawberry, apple, orange and ginger juice, but i took TOO much ginger! So it was to strong for my boyfriends mother who dont like strong juices.
Neil Martin: Which do you think is more essential to health and wellbeing, exercise or diet and nutrition?
Yvonne Hansen: I think diet and nutrition are the keys to good health.
Neil Martin: How much and what kinds of exercise do you regularly do?
Yvonne Hansen: I play football 2-3 days a week, plus one match at the weekend during the football season.
Neil Martin: What do you eat / drink on a typical day?
Yvonne Hansen: On a typical day I eat bread with toppings for breakfast, the same for lunch. Dinners often consist of bird, fish or meat, and bread with topping for supper. I drinking plenty of water each day, plus of course one glass of juice almost every day.
Neil Martin: Is your diet completely vegetarian / vegan?
Yvonne Hansen: No, i love meat.
Neil Martin: What are your thoughts on caffeine and alcohol?
Yvonne Hansen: I drink coffee just once in a while. I won’t lie, I do like a nice glass of wine now and then. But I don’t drink much coffee or alcohol.
Neil Martin: What advice would you give someone who is thinking about adding juicing to their life?
Yvonne Hansen: My advice would be to say that juicing is easy, healthy and very good.
Neil Martin: If you were stuck on a desert island with a working juicer and blender and an unlimited supply of just 6 ingredients, what would those ingredients be?
Yvonne Hansen: My six ingredients would be apple, ginger, pineapple, lemon, strawberry and blueberry.
