When Tanya Hoffay from Queens, New York, US was suffering from health issues that were being aggravated by being overweight, doctors advised her to consider a gastric bypass. Tanya disagreed and opted to try juicing for weight loss instead, going on a juice reboot for 105 days and losing 84 pounds (38 kg).

Neil Martin: When did you first start juicing and how did you first learn about the idea?

Tanya Hoffay: My physical therapist had recommended the movie “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead“. It took me about 6 weeks before I actually watched it. After watching the movie I ordered my juicer the next day and started my journey on 22 July 22 2013.

Gastric bypass? “I turned to juicing instead”

Neil Martin: What made you decide to start juicing?

Tanya Hoffay: I was in physical therapy for a meniscal tear with osteoarthritis in my right knee and the pain was so bad that I was walking with a cane, My doctor had recommended gastric bypass as a way to lose weight to help alleviate the pressure on my knee. I left her office with a script for blood pressure (bp) medication and a referral for gastric bypass. The orthopaedic doctor agreed with her recommendation. I on the other hand was not a fan of any kind of surgery. I chose not to fill the prescription or go to the referral. I turned to juicing instead.

Neil Martin: Did you follow a specific program, if so which one?

Tanya Hoffay: I checked out the Reboot with Joe website for inspiration and recipes.

Neil Martin: What have you found to be the biggest changes / benefits you’ve experienced since you started juicing?

Tanya Hoffay: The biggest benefit I found besides losing weight has been my blood pressure. It is now a nice 110/70. I no longer get migraines and my feet no longer swell or are constantly hot.

Neil Martin: Since you started juicing what have you found most challenging and how did you deal with this challenge?

Tanya Hoffay: The biggest challenge has been buying too much produce. My refrigerator is not that big. Drinking plenty of water was also a challenge.

“Juicing will always be a part of my life”

Neil Martin: How has juicing changed your life?

Tanya Hoffay: I feel that juicing had given me the opportunity to take back my health into my own hands and the realisation that I really do like fruits and vegetables. Juicing will always be a part of my life.

Neil Martin: What has been your biggest juicing mistake and why?

Tanya Hoffay: The biggest mistake was going out and buying a lot of produce without a plan for recipes in mind. I made a few juices that were not very good, but I drank anyway because I did not want to waste anything.

Facing a gastric bypass Tanya chooses juicing for weight loss

Neil Martin: Which do you think is more essential to health and wellbeing, exercise or diet and nutrition?

Tanya Hoffay: I think that if you don’t give your body the nutrients it needs to thrive all the exercise in the world will not help you when your body starts to rebel.

Neil Martin: How much and what kinds of exercise do you regularly do?

Tanya Hoffay: I am still dealing with the meniscal tear in my knee, but since losing weight I am now able to walk more than I was. I am also pulling my re-bounder out of retirement.

Neil Martin: What do you eat / drink on a typical day?

Tanya Hoffay: A typical day when I broke my fast was juice in the morning, juice at lunch and a salad with-veggies and chickpeas or soup and veggies for dinner and sometimes a juice at night or some herbal tea.

Neil Martin: Is your diet completely vegetarian / vegan?

Tanya Hoffay: I am trying to stay with more of a plant based diet, but I did indulge in some turkey this Thanksgiving.

Neil Martin: What are your thoughts on caffeine and alcohol?

Tanya Hoffay: I loved my coffee, but I did give it up when I started juicing and do not intend on having any again until my journey is complete. That will be my special reward. I never was a big drinker, but I have had a few drinks when I was out to dinner with friends. As with anything it is all about moderation and listening to the cues that your body is giving you.

“Have more energy and look younger”

Neil Martin: What advice would you give someone who is thinking about adding juicing to their life?

Tanya Hoffay: Juicing had been the best decision that I have made for myself. If you want to feel better, have more energy and look younger give juicing a try. Take it one day at a time, one juice at a time and don’t beat yourself up if you slip up.

Neil Martin: If you were stuck on a desert island with a working juicer and blender and an unlimited supply of just 6 ingredients, what would those ingredients be?

Tanya Hoffay: mango, pineapple, garlic, onion, tomatoes, parsley
