Have you ever watched Man vs Food, the TV show in which Adam Richman travels around the US taking on extreme eating challenges such as the 12-pound Eagle’s Burger? It that episode, Adam raced to consume 5 full lbs of hamburger plus 2 lbs of bacon and cheeses with a plate of 5 lbs of fries all topped with one giant pickle! Adam lost the challenge by a mere 6 ounces!
In another (failed) challenge Adam is filmed eating a thirty inch eleven pound Carnivore Challenge Pizza! He had one hour to accomplish this task but had to quit as he almost vomited the first half he ate!
In total there were four seasons of Man vs Food and the overall record stands at 48 wins for “Man” and 38 wins for “Food”.
In 2012 Adam Richman announced his retirement from food challenges. Having ballooned in size (including a 40 inch waistline) while making the show. Adam said he had become depressed over his weight and described his mirror image as resembling a “Smart Car”.
It’s not just weight gain
Adam became worried about his health and dwindling love life. He also developed sleep apnoea, a condition which obstructs oxygen flow to the brain.
I’ve written before about the impact what we put in our mouths can have on our health and size and I have to say that every time I’ve watched Man vs Food I’ve wondered what Adam Richman’s diet and lifestyle were like between filming.
Since quitting Man vs Food, Adam has lost 60 pounds (over 4 stone) by cutting down on white flour and dairy and increasing his exercise levels. He has admitted that sticking to his new lifestyle can be challenging:
“The crew got a bunch of pizzas, and it was all I could smell,” he says. “It sucked. But I had a Greek yogurt with raw almonds, water and an iced coffee, and I was satisfied.”
Since his weight loss, Adam’s sleep apnoea has also stopped.
