A few weeks ago Stewart and Jody from Las Vegas, Nevada posted an inspiring juicing before and after picture of my Facebook page and then kindly agreed to share their juicing story.
Neil Martin: When did you first start juicing and how did you first learn about the idea?
Stewart Pelser: We began our juicing journey on May 24, 2014 after discussing the juice reboot with our primary care physician. We learned about juicing after watching the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead about a year before.
Neil Martin: What made you decide to start juicing?
Stewart Pelser: We both decided to start juicing to improve our health. We wanted to be healthier versions of ourselves. When we first watched the Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead documentary, I thought juicing was for everyone else and Jody didn’t think she could survive on juice alone. But, almost a year later we were both ready to try a juice reboot. We decided to embark on our first 30 day reboot after consulting with our doctor. At first, Jody thought she would never be able to complete the 30 days! But we both surprised ourselves, and actually competed 60 full days of juice only.
Neil Martin: Did you follow a specific program, if so which one?
Stewart Pelser: We started by following Joe Cross’ reboot program after purchasing our juicers and Joe’s juice book. For the first few weeks we followed the juice only plan and followed juice recipes in the book. As juicing became the center of our life we started to stray from the book looking for new juice ideas. This is how we were introduced to websites like Natural Juice Junkie and we started adding new recipes to our old standby juices. We also found motivation from reading juicing success stories and received the positive support we needed to continue to reach our goals.
“My triglycerides were high. I also have Asthma, suffered from depression, anxiety, and gout. Jody suffers from PCOS”
Neil Martin: Did you have any medical conditions prior to juicing?
Stewart Pelser: Yes. My weight was over 390 pounds, my blood pressure was elevated (168/78) and my triglycerides were high. I also have Asthma, suffered from depression, anxiety, and gout. Jody suffers from PCOS.
Neil Martin: Was weight loss one of the reason you started juicing? If so, what other diets had you tried and how successful were they?
Stewart Pelser: Yes! Both of us have battled our weight our entire lives. We have tried so many diet and exercise programs! Including but not limited to STARVING ourselves! Some of the diets we tried in the past include the Atkins Diet, South Beach, NeutriSystem, Paleo Diet, OA diet (overeaters anonymous), the grapefruit diet, the cabbage soup diet, weight watchers, and a plan by Richard Simmons. None of them worked.
Neil Martin: Since juicing, how much weight have you lost?
Stewart Pelser: Since May 24, 2014 I have lost 55 pounds so far and Jody has lost 35 pounds (a total of approx 6.5 stone).
“I have had a decrease in my blood pressure, which is now normal 120/80! I have also noticed an improvement in my Asthma and my depression has subsided. Jody has also had decrease in her PCOS symptoms, improved energy and she feels more confident”
Neil Martin: What have you found to be the biggest changes / benefits you’ve experienced since you started juicing?
Stewart Pelser: I’ve lost more weight than I have ever lost in the past and because of the weight loss I have had a decrease in my blood pressure, which is now normal 120/80! I have also noticed an improvement in my Asthma and my depression has subsided. Jody has also had decrease in her PCOS symptoms, improved energy and she feels more confident.
Neil Martin: Since you started juicing what have you found most challenging and how did you deal with this challenge?
Stewart Pelser: I found my family to be my biggest challenge. I received very little support about this lifestyle change, which was unexpected. I found this the most challenging because positive support is the key to a change this big. Because, I did not receive the support and motivation I needed at home I surrounded myself with people who were supportive and excited about my weight loss goals. I started and continue on this journey with my girlfriend Jody. I found this partnership to be the most import part of my success so far. Initially, Jody found the biggest challenge to be social outings and events. We flooded ourselves with information from web sites like Natural Juice Junkie, about juicing, vegan lifestyle and clean eating to keep both of us motivated.
“Our relationship has become stronger because of the motivation and support we give each other everyday to make healthy choices”
Neil Martin: How has juicing changed your life?
Stewart Pelser: It made us more aware of how much our lives revolved around food and eating. Before juicing every social event included food. Now, we juice or eat before we attend a social event or we choose the restaurant based on the healthy food options they offer.
We are both more positive and have a more positive outlook on life! We are more adventurous and our lives do not revolve around food anymore. Our relationship has become stronger because of the motivation and support we give each other everyday to make healthy choices.
Neil Martin: What has been your biggest juicing mistake and why?
Stewart Pelser: Mixing and matching with out following a juice recipe. Just because it mixes well in other recipes doesn’t mean it mixes well in the juicer! One of my biggest mistakes was juicing beets, carrots and lettuce. Yuck!
Neil Martin: Any juicing tips you have picked up along the way?
Stewart Pelser: Listen to Jody and follow the recipes! There are so many good ones out there! Use glass bottles for storing your juice! It makes a huge difference in the taste and freshness! Also, juice in the morning for your breakfast and lunch. This way you can take your juice with you and stay on track to reach your goals.
Neil Martin: What resources (books, websites, movies, etc) have helped you on your journey and why?
Stewart Pelser: We surrounded ourselves with as much information about juicing as possible. We watched documentaries like Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and Super Juice Me to name a few. Jody listens to juicing radio and shares the information with me and we both follow Natural Juice Junkie on Facebook.
Neil Martin: Which do you think is more essential to health and wellbeing, exercise or diet and nutrition?
Stewart Pelser: I think a combination of both is essential. But, diet and nutrition has been the initial focus for Jody and I. We both have to see quick results to continue to be motivated and we received quick gratification with being in control of our eating first. We just started going to the gym.
Neil Martin: How much and what kinds of exercise do you regularly do?
Stewart Pelser: I am just starting to use the elliptical at the gym and plan to do cardio 3 times a week. Jody enjoys the treadmill.
Neil Martin: What do you eat / drink on a typical day?
Stewart Pelser: During our 60 day juice reboot we drank 4-6 juices per day. At the end of the 60 days, we continued to keep juice in our diet and drank one juice for breakfast and another for dinner. We ate lunches that consisted of fish and vegetables. Just this past week we met with our doctor to receive the results of our genetic testing for continued weight loss and we are now on a low fat diet, eating mostly fish and complex carbohydrates. But we still include juice in the morning.
Neil Martin: Is your diet completely vegetarian / vegan?
Stewart Pelser: No, although we eat a lot of vegetables and enjoy vegetarian and vegan meals, we include fish in our diet.
“Since juicing, we have eliminated both caffeine and alcohol and do not see a need to use them”
Neil Martin: What are your thoughts on caffeine and alcohol?
Stewart Pelser: We have not had caffeine or alcohol for the past 90 days! We both were iced tea drinkers, we both had it at almost every meal. Since juicing, we have eliminated both caffeine and alcohol and do not see a need to use them.
Neil Martin: What advice would you give someone who is thinking about adding juicing to their life?
Stewart Pelser: First, check out Fat Sick and Nearly Dead. Second, start slowly adding juice to your diet and removing unhealthy foods. Last, it is important to find a positive support network whether that be friends, family, or internet groups.
Neil Martin: If you were stuck on a desert island with a working juicer and blender and an unlimited supply of just 6 ingredients, what would those ingredients be?
Stewart: Pineapple, Cucumber, Ginger, Carrots, Lemons, Apples
Jody: Apples, Kale, Ginger, Lemons, Carrots, Cucumber
