Since he started juicing about 9 months ago Rich Adrian from Juicing101.ca has shed over 8 stone (115 lbs) and become free of medication. Pretty impressive for a “recovering alcoholic” who was suffering from obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, acid reflux, keratosis pilaris, eczema, depression, OCD, anxiety, ADHD, inflammation and bursitis! Oh, and he’s become a runner too!
Neil Martin: When did you first start juicing and how did you first learn about the idea?
Rich Adrian: January 2014. My wife told me about juicing after she watched Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead.
Neil Martin: What made you decide to start juicing?
Rich Adrian: Joe Cross and Phil Staples. These two guys were able to defy the odds and defeat disease. The transformation that they endured was incredible to watch and I became intrigued.
Neil Martin: Did you follow a specific program, if so which one?
Rich Adrian: We didn’t follow a specific plan as we were on a strict budget but started with a 15 day juice cleanse. Since January 2014, I have done numerous shorter cleanses, with my longest being 40 days.
Neil Martin: Did you have any medical conditions prior to juicing?
Rich Adrian: I had numerous medical conditions prior to juicing, they include: obesity (my heaviest weight calculated was 295 lbs), high cholesterol, high blood pressure, acid reflux, keratosis pilaris, eczema, depression, OCD, anxiety, ADHD, inflammation and bursitis in right hip.
“I was in pain every day and was sick and tired of feeling the way I did”
Neil Martin: Was weight loss one of the reason you started juicing? If so, what other diets had you tried and how successful were they?
Rich Adrian: Feeling healthy was my main reason for juicing. I was in pain every day and was sick and tired of feeling the way I did. I hadn’t really tried any diets in the past. Any time I would lose any weight I would gain in all back within a relatively short period of time. I looked at juicing as a lifestyle change as opposed to a diet.
Neil Martin: Since juicing, how much weight have you lost?
Rich Adrian: Since January 1st, 2014, I have lost a total of 115 lbs and currently take ZERO medications.
“Before juicing I was 34 years old but I felt like I was 30 years older”
Neil Martin: What have you found to be the biggest changes / benefits you’ve experienced since you started juicing?
Rich Adrian: The biggest changes / benefits I have experienced would have to be the amount of energy I have gained from juicing and eating a plant-based diet. Before juicing, it would take everything in me to walk a block or two. These days I am running 5K, 10K and half marathon events any chance I can. Juicing can be described as a fountain of youth. Before juicing I was 34 years old but I felt like I was 30 years older. I just recently turned 35 and I feel like I am in my 20’s. I am in the best shape I have ever been in.
Neil Martin: Since you started juicing what have you found most challenging and how did you deal with this challenge?
Rich Adrian: The most challenging would have to be the mental discipline you need in order to be successful. When I first started juicing, the first cleanse I wanted to throw in the towel by Day 2. I knew if I were to be successful and want the results I was looking for then I had to endure some punishment. I had punished my body for years, of course I could expect some punishment back. Look at it like this: My body was screaming at me, “What are you doing? I want the sugar, caffeine, meats, junk, processed foods!!! Get this crap out of me.” And then the fight started. The old me vs. the new me. Who would win. Who had the upper hand? I battled through and the new me came out on top. My main source of motivation was my children.
“Juicing has given me a new lease on life. My energy levels are through the roof!”
Neil Martin: How has juicing changed your life?
Rich Adrian: Where should I start? I believe juicing has given me a new lease on life. My energy levels are through the roof, my mind is not cluttered, my health is improving daily. My wife and I also started a business with juicing in mind. Green Thumb Juice was founded in May 2014, to bring healthier options to the streets on Hamilton and surrounding areas.
Neil Martin: Any juicing tips you have picked up along the way?
Rich Adrian: I have picked up a ton of tips along the way but I think the one tip that sticks out the most is to purchase a GOOD juicer. Juicers that are $40 are that for a reason. I learned that the hard way.
Neil Martin: Which do you think is more essential to health and wellbeing, exercise or diet and nutrition?
Rich Adrian: I would have to say that you need a good balance of exercise and diet and nutrition. One is not more essential than the other. They go hand in hand.
Neil Martin: How much and what kinds of exercise do you regularly do?
Rich Adrian: I try to work out at least 4 – 5 times a week. I do a combination of training exercises depending on what I am training for. Most recently I was training for Warrior Dash in Barrie, Ontario. 6K uphill, obstacle course. I signed up for this race in March 2014, when I was about 200 lbs. I started running every day or every other day. I never ran before in my life but after reading many success stories like Brian Robertson, Shane Whaley, and Neil Martin, I knew that this was something I wanted to do and I could do if I put my mind to it. I completed the Warrior Dash event on July 20th, with a time of 24:14 which is incredible. One year prior, I could barely walk, now I am destroying obstacle courses.
“I have changed my diet to a complete vegetarian diet”
Neil Martin: What do you eat / drink on a typical day?
Rich Adrian: I have changed my diet to a complete vegetarian diet. I also have limited the amount of dairy I have (cheese is my downfall). I try to drink at least one juice or smoothie each day. One most days I will enjoy a smoothie in the morning or afternoon with a handful of almonds or cashews.
Neil Martin: Is your diet completely vegetarian / vegan?
Rich Adrian: Completely vegetarian. Eliminated all dairy other than some cheeses.
Neil Martin: What are your thoughts on caffeine and alcohol?
Rich Adrian: I believe that in moderation caffeine can be of some good use. Alcohol on the other hand I have had bad dealings with, as a recovering alcoholic I would have to say that my thoughts would be to cut it out entirely.
Neil Martin: What advice would you give someone who is thinking about adding juicing to their life?
Rich Adrian: The advice I give to people is to know the facts. Watch the movies, listen to the stories, read the books. Juicing does help people regain their health. I know I am not perfect and I will never claim to be but what I have accomplished from adding juice to my lifestyle I would not have achieved doing what I was doing before. When people want to start juicing I want to help them.
Neil Martin: If you were stuck on a desert island with a working juicer and blender and an unlimited supply of just 6 ingredients, what would those ingredients be?
Rich Adrian: Easy answer for me. Kale, apples, cucumber, celery, ginger and lemon. Mean Green baby!!!
