Its been a while since Mark gave us a juicy update, but he is back. Over to you Mark…
I’m still here and I’m still juicing and eating cleanly as best I can. I’m not really where I would like to be. There is one thing that I always promised I would be when I undertook this blog. That was to always be honest.
Christmas & New Year Excess
It’s fair to say that after the excess of Christmas and New Year I have been struggling a little to get back to where I would like to be. I decided that I was going to take a relaxed approach towards my eating and drinking over the Christmas and New Year period and in fairness I had a great time with family and friends. The relaxed attitude did take its toll on the scales however and between the end of November and the beginning of January my weight had increased by 18 lbs ! So although I was juicing regularly I was also eating lots of celebration food and the intake of alcohol had increased quite significantly.
I wasn’t too worried, a similar thing had happened last year. The difference being that last year I had recovered the losses by the end of the January. Here we are in the middle of February and I have recovered only 7 lbs of the 18 lbs I gained.
Sneaky Bad Habits
This year has been very different. I’ve been juicing regularly but I have let some of my old bad habits sneak back in and I don’t think I’ve been as conscientious with what I’ve been doing over the weekends as I would otherwise have been. Where temptation has presented itself I have given in more often than I should. Another significant event during January was the loss of my Grandmother, which impacted everyone in the family greatly. Now I know that what happens to me is my responsibility and I fully accept that, but there is no doubt that all sorts of external factors can sneakily alter you thoughts or your focus to the detriment of your health. It’s maybe something I need to learn to be more sensitive to.
What’s The Action Plan?
Well the plan will tackle 4 specific areas:
Food Intake – I’m going to do a 7 day juice only reboot next week. This should kick start my weight loss and reset my taste buds. Following the 7 days I will settle back into a regular Juice – Juice – Low HI (Human Intervention) Meal pattern.
Exercise – Anyone that has read some of my previous blogs will know that exercise is the area where I struggle the most. I plan to make this year the year that I get fit, something that I haven’t even been close to being for well over 25 years! I finally got around to replacing the broken cross trainer a couple of weeks ago and I now have a shiny new spin bike which I’ve started to use 3 or 4 times a week. I have also taken advantage of a cycle scheme to purchase a new road bike and equipment. (by equipment I mean lycra!) I’m hoping I will have this in my posession by this time next week! I also plan to finally start a running program. I have a 0 to 10k plan which, dodgy knees allowing, I hope to start following next week.
Mind – As I have progressed along this journey I have come to understand more and more how important getting your mind in the right place is. This is an area which I can definitely put more effort in to. I’m generally a positive & happy person but I do need to take some time to get some specific goals written down. I also intend to come up with some plans for attaining those goals and for monitoring progress towards them on a more regular basis.
There are definitely some physical events that would form part of these goals. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if I could look back over 2015 knowing that I had taken part in and completed such events as a 50 mile cycle ride or an endurance running event or a triathlon? At this point in time I cant even contemplate being able to do those things but I know that in a few months, with the right attitude and some positive action I could be well on my way.
Engagement – Part of the action plan is to make sure that I stay engaged. I always have the support of my family which is a blessing and there are lots of other people out there that I can learn and gain support from and even offer support and knowledge to.
“If you want to travel fast, travel alone. If you want to travel far, travel together”- old African proverb.
Social media is a wonderful tool for gaining support from and providing support to people.
As a part of the engagement I’m really happy to announce that Neil (Natural Juice Junkie) has invited me to be interviewed by him on a live webcast next week! Eeek! Look out for details on that in the next few days.
Despite the February frustrations there is still a fundamentally positive story amongst all of this.
I am still a much healthier person today than I was 12 months ago and I am still a much healthier person than I was when I started juicing in August of 2013. I am still 70 lbs lighter than I was in August 2013. I still have more energy and more importantly than all of that is, I’m medication free and happy!
When times are getting a bit frustrating it’s easy to forget the major victories that you have already won. Maybe we should all reflect a little more and rejoice our successes.
