In 2012 Julie Duffield was suffering from fibromyalgia, delayed stomach emptying and a genetic connective tissue syndrome called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome hyper mobility type (EDS 3). Her collagen was damaged and as a result her joints were not being held in place, often popping out of their sockets. Her illnesses were impacting her whole body and she had been told “there is no cure.”

Julie recently commented about her juicing journey on a post in the Natural Juice Junkie Facebook community and kindly offered to share more of her experience.

“I want to share my story to show the power of having real food in your life and how it can improve health and life,” says Julie, adding, “I wish I’d have known about it when I was in my 20s.”

Talking about how life used to be, Julie says, “I was in so much pain and on lots of medication that didn’t help.”

She says how the medication made her hair fall out and made her feels it was turning her “into a zombie.”

“I used to wear a medical corset just to hold my ribs in place as they were always popping out. I wore other joint supports. I had tore a tendon in my wrist and had a tear in my rotator cuff and was on the waiting list for surgery. I’d already had surgery on both my shoulders.”

In January 2013 Julie decided to research fibromyalgia and discovered that a change in diet could potentially help.

“I started clean eating which made a huge difference,” she says.

In July 2013 Julie started juicing, finding it an easy thing to incorporate into her life.

She says, “By day 4 I felt fantastic and had slept all night the night before. This was the first time I’d slept all night in 20 years.”

In just 3 months Julie was off all her medication and her torn tendon and rotator tear had healed. She says her digestive system was also “normal again”.

“I felt 20 years younger and had lost all my health issues,” says Julie, adding, “I no longer had to sleep in that horrible uncomfortable medical corset or wear joint supports. As a bonus I lost 3 stone (42 pounds).”

Three years later, Julie explains that she continues to include juicing her lifestyle as well as eating a diet rich in plant-based whole foods.

She says, “says “I’m so healthy I’ve not had a cold since winter 2012. I realise just how important nutrition is to the body and how chemicals in our food makes us ill.”
