A couple of weeks ago I received a message from Scott Lowe in Noblesville, Indiana in the US saying: “Neil Martin thank you so much for being an inspiration to everyone!” and revealing how he had juiced off 60 pounds and has a doctor who “was doing handstands” reading his numbers and how they have fallen. Blood pressure way down, body fat down, muscle mass up! Unbelievable!!
I wanted to learn more about his journey and was really pleased when he agreed to an interview.
Neil Martin: When did you start juicing and how did you first learn about the idea?
Scott Lowe: I am a massage therapist and when I was in massage school, a lady sat next to me and she would have several different jars and bottles with various juices. She would talk about juicing and being on a raw diet. I didn’t realise it at the time but she was planting the seeds of change.
Neil Martin: What made you decide to start juicing?
Scott Lowe: After a looking at a few recent vacation photos, I was very unhappy with the weight I had gained over the past months/years. My wife and I decided to begin eating healthier. About 6 weeks into our better eating, we watched the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. That changed everything! We immediately knew this was something we were going to do!
Neil Martin: Did you follow a specific program, if so, which one?
Scott Lowe: During the making of Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, they repeatedly made a juice called Mean Green. Mean Green has Kale, Cucumber, Celery, Apple, Lemon and Ginger as its ingredients and we fell in love with it! We began to research various recipes and had a few favourites that were a good jumping off point. Nothing really specific other than following the 80/20 rule. Each recipe should try to have 80% vegetables and 20% fruit. Very important!
Neil Martin: Did you have any medical conditions prior to juicing?
Scott Lowe: Thankfully, I’ve been pretty healthy my entire life and had no medical issues. My wife has had migraine headaches and stomach issues through the years so she was juicing to see if this would help with those. I am very proud to report that as of this writing, she had not had an issue with either ailment the entire time of our fast! It’s truly a blessing for her to not have to suffer a single day with either issue!
Neil Martin: Was weight loss one of the reasons you started juicing! If so, what other diets had you tried and how successful were they?
Scott Lowe: Weight loss was a big reason for myself but the biggest reason was to be an inspiration to my family and friends. Upon watching the documentary, I was very moved to help a close family member. We began our fast and didn’t tell anyone I was doing it! I wanted to see if they could notice the change. We were probably about 25-30 days in when people could really begin to notice a big change. I happy to report that my family member I wanted to help has indeed seen the movie and has begun to juice! I’m also happy to report that many friends and family members have also began juicing so it’s an exciting time all around!
No migraines, no stomach issues, lot of lost weight… why didn’t we do this sooner??
Neil Martin: Since juicing, how much weight have you lost?
Scott Lowe: We began cleaning up our diets in late July and started a 60 day juice fast on October 16th. The fast concluded on December 16th. Since late July, I’ve lost 60+ pounds! My wife has lost at least 30 pounds so we are very blessed and thankful for juicing to say the least! No migraines, no stomach issues, lot of lost weight… why didn’t we do this sooner??
Neil Martin: What have you found to be the biggest changes/ benefits you’ve experienced since started juicing?
Scott Lowe: Obviously with the weight loss and loss of migraines and stomach issues, those have been the biggest benefits. We’ve also found that our skin is better and acne has cleared up. As a massage therapist, I can have a full day of clients and by evenings end, I am not tired. My energy levels have increased tremendously. I’m very surprised by this and didn’t anticipate it to be honest but it was definitely welcome!
Neil Martin: Since you started juicing, what have you found most challenging and how did you deal with this challenge?
Scott Lowe: For me it was mental. I had dedicated myself to do the full 60 days, no questions asked. Once we were on about Day 7, Day 8, all I could think was, “Oh my God, we’ve got 53 more days of this!!” But honestly, once we got to Day 11, 12, and someone would ask what day we were on….I had to stop and think. The mental hurdle was over. I can’t really explain it. It’s just something you plow through and it actually becomes easier. You’ve adjusted to this new lifestyle and don’t even realize it!

I look at food much differently now. Instead of living to eat, I now eat to live
Neil Martin: How has juicing changed your life?
Scott Lowe: I look at food much differently now. Instead of living to eat, I now eat to live. I pay much more attention to where my food comes from. I’m more aware of what, both good and bad, is actually in my food. All this from someone who has generally never read food labels or never as nutritionally-aware as I should have been. I definitely look at food and grocery shopping with a very different set of eyes now.
Neil Martin: What has been your biggest juicing mistake?
Scott Lowe: Other than not juicing and fasting much sooner in my life, I don’t have any regrets or recall making any mistakes during our fast. We researched everyday and everything we could think of. We asked questions, read books and articles…any way we could educate ourselves, we did it. They say “knowledge is power” and we wanted to be as informed as possible.
Neil Martin: Any juicing tip you have picked up along the way?
Scott Lowe: Always remember that if you make a juice and it tastes horrible, don’t think that you’ve wasted your time or wasted the produce you’ve just juiced. It’s amazing how adding one or two more apples can change the taste and the chemistry of a juice and really help it! Also if you can afford it, invest in a good juicer. You want a juicer that provides a good yield. You’ll end up saving so much money that the juicer will pay for itself!
Neil Martin: What resources (books, websites, movies, etc) have helped you on your journey and why?
Scott Lowe: Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead was such a huge part of our transformation. It’s so inspiring and shows what can be done if one is ready to accept the challenge. Hungry For Change is another tremendous film. Of course, Neil Martin aka The Natural Juice Junkie is fantastic! His story is inspirational as well! Neil’s videos were key to us finding a juicer (We bought a masticating juicer, the Optimum 600, on his recommendation. We absolutely love it!). Both Neil and Joe Cross are tremendous follows on social media. We found a very good reference book called The Juicing Bible and it’s been a really big help. Not only does it have recipes but it also lists ailments and what foods are good to help treat them. Very good pickup!!
Drinking more water and even doing some walking can be a big instrument of change!
Neil Martin: Which do you think is more essential to health and wellbeing, exercise or diet and nutrition?
Scott Lowe: I believe diet and nutrition are the most important. Making good choices of what we put into our bodies is incredibly huge. It’s so easy in today’s age to fall into bad habits. Convenience with fast food and microwaveable meals have a critical effect on our health. But thankfully, making small adjustments can have a major impact! It may not seem like much but introducing more fresh fruits and vegetables, drinking more water and even doing some walking can be a big instrument of change!
Neil Martin: How much and what kinds of exercise do you regularly do?
Scott Lowe: When I began the fast, I would set my alarm every morning for 5am and get on our treadmill. I would usually walk for just over an hour, walking between 3.5 and 4 miles. I also would do some push-ups, sit-ups and crunches. Nothing too crazy but enough to make a difference.
Neil Martin: What do you eat/ drink on a typical day?
Scott Lowe: As of this writing, we are on Day 4-post fast so we are in the “weening-out” stage. To make the transition into and out of the fast, we decided to ween-in and out of the fast. Due to weening-in, the detox portion of the fast was minimal to none. Once the fast was over, we wanted to be cautious about what we ate and how much. We still continue to juice but have introduced soups and whole fruits and vegetables back into our meals.
Neil Martin: Is your diet completely vegetarian/ vegan?
Scott Lowe: When we were researching our post-fast menus, we found many vegetarian and vegan meals that we are extremely excited about. Our diets will be focused on plant-based foods as much as possible. It’s amazing how many recipes you can find and the effort to prepare them looks rather easy and the foods itself makes me hungry just looking at them! Ha!
Neil Martin: What are your thoughts on caffeine and alcohol?
Scott Lowe: I believe both can lead to bad habits and health conditions. There are so many better alternatives that are better for your health. Unfortunately, many people consume far too much and these become a part of their daily lives. We need to help people see that there are better avenues to travel and they will be happier in the end.
Neil Martin: What advice would you give someone who is thinking about adding juicing to their life?
Scott Lowe: First and foremost….research, research, research!
Here are a few more tips Scott shared:
- Please get a physical from your doctor and get your doctor’s permission.
- Simply adding 1 juice a day to your daily diet will give results. You’re giving your body more nutrients than perhaps it’s had for awhile, so how could it not have a positive impact?
- If you do intend on fasting, I highly recommend weening into and out of a fast. At the beginning of a fast, your body will experience a detox period. This detox is when your body will get rid of the sugar and other toxins in your body. For some, it’s not a very pleasant time. You may experience grouchiness, restlessness and just don’t want to be sociable at all. By going slowly, this will give your body time to adjust.
- Please don’t be hard on yourself!! This is a big life change for most people. For example, If you want to do a 5 day fast and get 2 days in and have to eat a small salad, don’t look at yourself as a failure! Good on you for trying!! You have to be positive and always know there are a lot of ordinary people just like you that have tried or are currently trying the same thing. You have a giant support system!! Neil Martin: If you were stuck on a desert island with a working juicer and blender and an unlimited supply of just 6 ingredients, what would those ingredients be?
Scott Lowe: Ha! Ok, lets see, I fell in love with Golden Beets during the fast so that’s my definite #1 pick. Regular Beets, Pineapple, Kale, Carrots and Apples are my favourites as well. So many good combinations and candidates for sure!
