Eating 10 portions of fruit and vegetables per day could help to prevent 7.8 million premature deaths each year, according to recent research by Imperial College London.
Yet nearly half of Brits have days when we eat ZERO fruit or veg, according to a study commissioned by Dole Packaged Foods Europe.
I recently posted a blog about this and one of the more common responses was ‘it is too expensive to eat 10 portions of fruit and veg each day’. Is this true?
Get you 10-a-day for £1.40 per day (or less)
I decided to do some homework and looking on the websites of the UK’s 5 leading supermarkets I was pleasantly surprised with what I found.
Some ingredients worked out as low as 4p per portion for the recommended 80g fruit and veg portion size and the AVERAGE of 19 different ingredients I compared was just 14p per portion.
Morrisons Wonky Potatoes and Tesco Redmere Farms Carrots were among the lowest priced produce, with the highest cost being for leafy greens such as spinach and kale.
I think is also important to remember that online shopping with big supermarkets may not be the most cost effective way to buy your produce. Often if you visit the supermarket you will find discounted items and local independent market stalls will be often be even cheaper still (especially near the end of a trading day).
Working on average price of 14p per portion (which includes a good variety of produce including leafy greens, root vegetables, brassicas and fruits) the cost per person of 10 fruits and vegetables is just £1.40 – LESS THAN £10 per week.
Healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive.
